Yesteryear Collection

The Hertfordshire Constabulary was one of the last County Police Forces to be established and was formed on 12th April 1841 when the first Chief Constable was appointed, although the first Constable was not appointed until May 6th 1841. Although a Wolsey car was purchased in 1905, for the use of the then Chief Constable, it was not until 1914 that the first dedicated Police car was bought. This was a two-seater Swift, registration number AR4364, and cost the princely sum of £119, and was principally driven by one of the then two Superintendents. Since that time the vehicle fleet, comprising principally of Ford vehicles, has expanded to comprise some 378 assorted vehicles, ranging from mopeds through to the Forces coach.
Although some of the more specialised vehicles are of varying makes, the vehicle fleet is still predominantly manufactured by Fords.
